Interview with Fashion Designer / Sammy B | Edition XIII
When did you realize you wanted to become a designer and what was the
first article of clothing you ever designed?
After taking a pre-college program the summer before my senior year in high-school is when I realized that fashion Design is what I wanted to do. The first article of clothing that I designed and actually constructed was during that summer! It was a A-Line denim skirt with Mexican inspired trim.
How would you define your city’s fashion?
My city’s fashion is whatever goes! My citys fashion is defined by the streets, the color, the vibe of the people who live here; its inspired by the mash-up of cultures that migrate here. Not one thing ever goes, I love my city’s fashion.
When you started out did you think it would be a serious business?
I always hoped and planned for my clothing line to be a serious business. I NEVER wanted to be just a seamstress sewing someone else’s designs. I always envisioned SammyB as a “house hold” name, a line that people look for and respect.
How is the internet changing your craft?
With the internet, now I can look for inspiration from all over. From visiting runway shows to sites like look book to DIY sites or to googling different shapes and art. The internet helps me more in the designing steps. Also with the internet it allows for people in different countries and areas to be exposed to different styles, lines etc.
Your concepts are very unique and original is there a pressure to
always maintain that consistency with your new designs?
Yes! I feel like people look to me to have a certain level of “you cant find that anywhere” or “ how did you think of that”. But for me with how I design and do most of my line is, I want fun, flirty clothing that has an edge but is comfortable!! Any and everything I do, is always true to me and that’s what I try to add to my line. It just happens that sometimes a design executes as a simple one shoulder dress with a crazy print/pattern and other times it executes as a Mesh body suit with hand sewn braided leather strips strategically placed. In the end Its all me and my design aesthetic, and I am forever growing reienventing myself as a designer.
Do you consider yourself an artist?
Definetly! Actually art is my base, my foundation. I’ve always painted, did drawings, sculptures, art & crafts etc. and its not until a man I took art lessons from asked to see my notebooks from school. When I brought my notebooks to him, they of course were filled with doodles and sketches etc. My notebooks were mainly filled with girls with funky poses and fashionable outfits. That’s when it was recommended to me that I look into fashion design.
Who are some people you want to interact with this year?
Rhianna, lol, but no seriously I dig her and her style no matter what people have to say. This year I want to interact with more magazines, editors, boutiques, more stylist, and more TRUE fashion minded folk.
Lastly, could you talk about any long-term goals you have in mind?
One of my long-term goals is to own my own SammyB boutique. A boutique that would sell my line as well as other fly lines with a similar spirit to SammyB. I also hope to have my line selling in larger boutique stores such as Barney’s Co-op, Lf stores etc.
