Interview with Graphic Artist / Ka’reem Songz | Edition XIII
How do you describe your Graphic Art to people?
I would describe my Graphic Art as an orgasmic fantasy, makes you want to role-play and fantasize with the thoughts it will take your mind to when you look at it. It’s Playful and kind of Picaso-ish with lots of things going on at once and you don’t know where to look first. It’s different from your next Graphic Designer because in a way I like my viewers to kind of interact with my work whether it’s rotating the pieces to get the full affect or squinting one eye it sets my work in its own lane.
So what is the motivation behind your whole movement?
One of my motivations behind my whole movement will have to be me not being able to head to college for personal reasons like I planned on. I want to prove to people that just because one door closes in your face there is always an axe somewhere nearby and you have to find a way to break it down and make positive out of it. I have a lot of people that think I went to school for Graphic Design or graduated from some top notch high school and that’s not at all true. I went to a ass bootleg Performing Arts and Technology High School in the hood of Brooklyn where I majored in music and taught myself everything I know about Graphic Design and another motivation that keeps me going is the fact that I have is that I have people tell me that they look up to me and that is very shocking to me and that keeps me humble I feel like I need to improve each time I here something so positive like that.
Who are some people you would like to work with?
I would like to work with artist such as Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell, Lupe Fiasco, Santogold, M.I.A, Kid Cudi artist like that I feel that their CREATIVITY IS BONKERS! I’m fascinated with things that are NOT NORMAL and I would say that these are some of the artist that put me together like a puzzle artistically! I would also love to work with KAWS and even D. Blanks who does amazing alter-ego photography! Or anyone else who gives me a chance.
How does music influence your work?
Music influences my work a great deal. I honestly don’t think I can work without music, not even for a little bit. I’m also a Singer and a Songwriter so without music my creativity is like 2 newborn babies trying to blow Bubblegum bubbles [Laughs-Out-Loud]. Music takes me away from this crazy place we call Earth, Takes away all my issues and cures everything that went wrong during my day. My favorite artist I like to listen to while I work are artists like Wynter Gordon, Uffie, Kanye West, Lights, Fefe Dobson, Cold Play, N.E.R.D, Kes Kaos, M.I.A, and Weezy. There’s a lot but I’m sure you get the point I like a wide amount it all depends on how im feeling at the moment.
Do you feel like what you are doing is important?
YES! In just about any job field you’re going to need some kind of LOGO without that your business is just another building on the block no matter whom it is you need to brand yourself in some kind of way. NEED ONE? and I also feel that my work has an impact on a lot of people especially for people who really lives, breathes and appreciates art and creativity!
When you started out did you think it would be a serious business?
It’s funny you asked this question, because Graphic Design was NEVER something I never saw myself doing until I was introduced to it in like 2005 after seeing people on MySpace with all these dope designs on their pictures and layouts and , I remember asking some of them can they teach me or make some of my pictures nice like theirs was and each and every last one of them told me no and some was even nasty towards me, so from then one day I googled and downloaded one of those 30 day Photoshop Trails and began to teach myself everything that I know today. I didn’t think it would be a serious business when I first started and I didn’t think much about it except every time I took a new picture that I had to put a cool font and a brush on it. As time went on I got better and better I started charging people on MySpace who would ask for backgrounds and stuff like that. Ended up doing my high school Yearbook Cover Class of ’08, Doing work for BET’s “Baldwin Hills” Cast member Ettienne (Sheryl Lee Ralph’s Son) I’m actually working on his Yearbook Pages right now. I’ve had Victoria Secret Super Model Selita Ebanks ask me to send one of my pieces to her agency, Won Steph Jones art cover contest for his remake of “The Little Drummer Boy” and have gotten comments from Teairra Mari, Teyana Taylor and Their fan base. Now I’m currently working on a line of Graphic Tee’s and hoping to make this a SERIOUS BUSINESS and pray that I maintain the creative juice that flows through my blood everyday with my work years down the line because this is one of those things I will be sticking with!
Must art have a relationship to the rest of the world?
YES!! Doesn’t matter what kind of art it is, Dance, Singing, Writing, Graphics, Modeling its all some form of art. A way of expression that is expressed in many different ways!
Lastly, could you talk about any long-term goals you have in mind?
Graphics is just ONE of my talents, my first love is Music I have goals on being a Singer-Songwriter and a Model. I figure once I get my clothing line launched and it does well then I’ll have my foot in the door for modeling. I just happen to be blessed to have tons of talents and with that said I’ll let you follow and watch me grow into what GOD put me here on earth to be!
