Interview with the CEO of / Gigi Florence | Edition XI

Describe your Brand As if we were all blind
Sexy, yet edgy, shirts that are for the cutting-edge woman that, wants to make a statement when they are walking into anywhere and be noticeable.

When did you realize you wanted to become a designer and what was the first article of clothing you ever designed?
I have loved everything and anything to do with fashion since I was young. I used to walk around with an attache buying product for my dad’s store ever since I was 15 years old on the weekends. You could also find me watching product and merchandise for the store on 116th and 3rd ave. The first piece of article I designed was a long-tank dress with 2 slips up to high thigh slits (back in the 80’s) and it did amazing! People bought it from my own personal store and as product for their stores to sell.

How would you define your city’s fashion?
Very fast and very exciting being in new York. It is the capitol of fashion in the united states!

When you started out did you think it would be a serious business?
Yes, very passionate about everything. If you told me “I don’t like a shirt” I have designed I would get hurt by it.

How is the Internet changing your craft?
Researching is easy! Everything is at the tip of your finger. You can know what your competitors are doing as well as upcoming trends. No more leg work but, I have to say their is nothing like hands on research that still has to be done.

Your concepts are very unique and original is there a pressure to always maintain that consistency with your new designs?
You have to out do yourself every time. Constantly have to think and accomplish surpassing your last season.

Do you consider yourself an artist?
NO. Far from being an artist in my opinion just someone with amazing vision.

Who are some people you want to be interacting with this year?
Get merchandise into the right locations and mingle with right buyers to try something new. Sometimes it’s not what you know, its who you know to be successful.

What do you advise for upcoming designer’s?
To start from the bottom and move up to the top. Learn everything from working in your own store, to wholesale, to buying product to educate yourself and be successful on the business aspect of things.

Lastly, could you talk about any long-term goals you have in mind?
I want to be in business for a long time with lines and divisions that are unique, great quality, with the industry analysis “GiGi Florence is amazing and the clothing speaks for itself”.
