Interview with Akeem From BarrelHouseBklyn
How are you feeling at the start of a new year, any big plans for 2011?
I feel exited for the new year! New ideas, new projects, everything just bigger and better.
Please explain exactly what it is you do or known for?
Well we all work together as a collective team but I specifically like handling the fashion part of barrelhouse… Any brand that wants a feature and is sophisticated I will definitely work with! I also handle the finances of barrelhouse, making sure everything is taken care of.
So what is the motivation behind your whole movement?
The motivation really is to be something great as a whole. We want to be the #1 site people go to when they want to find talent in music, fashion, art, and also give a stage for underground artists to be heard.
Who are some people you would like to work with?
No one specifically but any reputable fashion brand, music label, artist, and definitely up and coming talent.
How is the Internet changing what you do?
It changes things because it broadens the horizons and the audience we reach. It also allows us to be tangible via twitter and facebook with our fans and fellow comrades.
Are you down with the whole twitter thing? How is this an important outlet for you and others?
Twitter is amazing! The people you can meet are endless and its a great promotion tool!
Do you feel like what you are doing is important and in what way beneficial to you sector?
What we do over at barrelhouse is very important because we expose talent which may have never gotten a chance for their voice or talent to be heard or seen. By doing this we build a fan base which will look out for new artists, or fashion designers to see whats new and fresh! Like the say, out with the old, in with the new; and we have the new. This also helps us because eventually we gain revenue through our activities and events.
How do you separate yourself from others?
On a group note, we separate ourselves by using mostly original content, and we also hold showcases for people to see the musicians perform. There are a lot of sites that have new artist’s music but how many of them hold showcases? My point exactly lol. Interviews on the artists are coming real soon also!
Who were some people you interacted with this year?
Many different people like musicians Stalley, L.A., Scienze, D.Julien, and many different photographers, videographers, magazines, clothing brands, etc…
Could you talk about any long-term goals you have in mind?
I see barrelhouse being a lifestyle company… Barrelhouse TV, Barrelhouse Photography, we have the clothing line “Concrete Heavens”, we’re still doing showcases (bigger and better), interviews on artists and designers, and the site still going!
