Interview with Ashani From BarrelHouseBklyn
How are you feeling at the start of a new year, any big plans for 2011?
New Year. Fresh Start. Enormous Plans!!!
Please explain exactly what it is you do or known for?
My name is Ashani Allick, and I am the founder of BarrelHouseBKLYN. We are a media outlet for upcoming artists from all backgrounds, including fashion, art, and music. We provide a platform for creators to showcase their talents to the masses, as well as to other budding movers & shakers. Through artist showcases, an online blog site, videos, and an ever-growing conglomerate of like minded individuals, We help to promote underground artists and give them a place to be heard. .
So what is the motivation behind your whole movement?
The motivation behind our movement is Culture. My partners and I are all avid lovers of hip-hop and soul. Me, myself I have a history of musicians in my family, so I’ve grown up on all of the classic artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Luther Vandross, Gil Scott Heron, just to name a few. But also being that I have a West Indian heritage, I have also grown up on Bob Marley, Maxi Priest, Peter Tosh, and many other Reggae artists. A combination of love for music and it’s art, and our ambition and drive to be a successful outlet for the underground music scene, is what drives our movement.
Who are some people you would like to work with?
Some people that I would like to work with are Curt@!n$, Dom Kennedy, The CoolKids, Pac Div, Blu & Exile, Curren$y, Melo-X, and Kendrick Lamar just to name a few.
How is the Internet changing what you do?
The internet is a MAJOR aspect of our movement. The internet is such a powerful tool if you know how to use it correctly. We have had a total of 8 successful shows/concerts between 2009-2010 and we have never printed a physical flyer. Straight internet promo. Between these social networks, blog sites/magazines, the opportunities for getting your music out, promoting, and generating revenue are endless.
Are you down with the whole twitter thing? How is this an important outlet for you and others?
Definitely down with the Twitter movement lol. You can follow me here: @RenaissanceBK and you can follow the BarrelHouseBKLYN company twitter here: @BarrelHouseBKLN. It is an important outlet for ourselves and others because it provides a direct link to an individual. It also is an excellent source of networking which is extremely necessary in our line of business.
Do you feel like what you are doing is important and in what way beneficial to you sector?
Yes, I feel that what we’re doing is important because in a world where records aren’t selling and artists are now making a living for themselves independently, i.e. Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y. BarrelHouseBKLYN will be a force in this new wave of independent artistry, offering media services and exposure to these artists through our showcases.
How do you separate yourself from others?
We don’t necessarily focus on being separate from others. We just focus on our main goal. Being a force in the independent arts movement.
Who were some people you interacted with this year?
Some notable people that we have interacted with this year were, Stalley, SkiBeatz, Jesse Boykins III, Stanley Lumax (Anomaly Marketing), Mickey Factz and the GFC NY family, just to name a few.
Could you talk about any long-term goals you have in mind?
The long term goal is to have the biggest and most widely known underground artist showcases in the country, and to be the number one media outlet for artists to get their music out, whether it be through videos, mixtapes, studio time, graphic design, we can service the artist that has the talent but not the connections.
