Describe your sound as if we were deaf
Like a wave coming at you as you playfully challenge the ocean for a swim!
What producers, songwriters and/or artists do you see as your primary inspirations?
I love a ton of music, I guess for me vocally there was always EllaFitzgerald, Mariah Carey, Whitney Huston, and Broadway musicals lol, I really connected to Jonathan Larson’s RENT, the songwriting is brilliant. Other songwriters I enjoy are Kenny Loggins, Joni Mitchell, Sting and Van Morrison to name a few old schoolers, on the new side Jessie J, Adele, RubbleBuckett and I could go on all day lol!! Lastly some producers that lift me are, Kanye West, Ryan Leslie, “Bang” from Chiddy Bang and of course my main producer Mike Fresh.
Do you have a favorite musical project that you’ve worked on?
I would have to say my most current project CirclesAndLines. The first single “Musical Androgyny” is now available for free on my bandcamp (amackdavis.bandcamp.com). The track starts out sounding like a standard house track but then slowly tricks your ear into several different rhythms without the listener even knowing when or where it happened.
What was the main factor for launching your career when you did?
Lol! Wow! Really it was due time, all the right components come together in the perfect order and before you know it your classmate and friend suggests that your senior project (an hour’s worth of your recorded music due in to be critiqued by the board of the conservatory upon graduation) is worth having a release for in the city and making a Bandcamp page for so that people can get the music. From that point on it’s been a go!!! Lol!
Who are some people you would like to work with?
Bobby McFerrin!!!!! Jesse Norman, Fall Out Boy, Wiz Khalifa, Chiddy Bang, Danger Mouse, The Dixie Chicks, Chris Brown, The Gourds, Moving Mountains, Allison Krauss, I’m all over the place there are soooo many!!!
How is the internet changing your craft?
More and more I realize how important it is to REALLY connect with people and fans alike, the web can become a social handicap you know? But if utilized intelligently and consciously it can be a huge tool for breaking creative and human boundaries on so many levels.
Do you feel like what you are doing is important?
I feel it is imperative.
Lastly, could you talk about any long-term goals or talents you have in mind?
Launching New Fame, my collective artist’s label, and getting the message out to the world as vastly as possible that ALL is possible and Empowerment is a necessity at the core of Pop Culture. This summer is shaping up to be exciting, June -August I am headed to Mexico and parts of Central America with Fighting For Futures (www.fightingforfutures.org), on the He(art) and Service tour.
