Most album covers are asked to do one job: be recognisable at the size of a thumbnail. The cover of Pirouette refuses that brief. It is a full, hand-drawn Yoshitaka Amano painting — a pale figure in red folded into a storm of ink, feathers and silk — and it looks less like packaging than like a page torn from a book you have not been allowed to read yet. That is the point. 2hollis is not selling a record so much as opening a door into a world, and he has asked one of the great world-builders of the last fifty years to paint the doorway.

01THE MAN WHO DREW FANTASY

Hurt — the first single from Pirouette
Hurt — the first single from Pirouette

For anyone who grew up with a controller in their hands, Amano needs little introduction. His drawings defined the look of Final Fantasy long before the games could render anything close to them; his illustrations for Vampire Hunter D made horror look like couture. His figures are elongated, androgynous and weightless, wrapped in fabric that seems to be blowing in a wind from somewhere else. He does not draw people so much as the idea of a person as a legend would remember them.

That is precisely why the pairing works. In the announcement from his studio, Amano described 2hollis as having a delicate, sensitive quality, and said he felt like a character who had stepped out of one of his own paintings — so much so that he did not need to change his style to draw him. It is a remarkable thing for an artist of that stature to say about a musician still in his early twenties. It is also an accurate description of the persona 2hollis has been building: blond, slight, theatrical, always half in shadow.

02FROM THE BASEMENT TO THE BALLET

Sex

2hollis did not arrive fully formed. His early music lived in the overlap between underground rap, hyper-compressed electronic production and the yearning melodic hooks of alternative pop — songs that sounded like they were made for both a sweaty warehouse and a bedroom at four in the morning. He shared boy in 2024, followed it with the major-label debut star in 2025, and made the jump without sanding off the strangeness. He produces, he writes, he performs as if the stage were a set piece.

He also grew up close to the machinery of music. His mother co-founded the electronic label OWSLA; his father, John Herndon, is the drummer in Tortoise, one of the most quietly influential bands of the post-rock era. It would be lazy to say this explains him. But it does suggest an artist who understood early that a record is a whole object — sound, image, story and silhouette working together.

03A RECORD AS A WORLD

Pirouette is due on November 11, 2026, through Interscope — 11/11, a date that reads like a wish. The singles so far map the territory. “Hurt” arrived in the summer. “Sex” leans into huge, EDM-sized pop euphoria, closer to a festival main stage than a SoundCloud upload. “Warhorse” had been part of his live sets for months before it was officially released, which tells you something about how he works: the songs are tested in rooms full of people, then fixed in place.

The title matters too. A pirouette is a turn performed on one point, balanced and spinning, controlled and dizzy at the same time. It is a dancer's move rather than a rapper's, and it fits an album that, by its own label's account, shows a more romantic and expressive side. The idea is not reinvention. It is rotation — the same core identity seen from a new angle.

“He has asked one of the great world-builders of the last fifty years to paint the doorway.”

04WHY THE COVER IS THE ARGUMENT

There is a generation of artists for whom the album cover had become almost an afterthought: a photo, a font, a streaming square. The most interesting young musicians are pushing back. They understand that in a feed full of identical rectangles, the image is the first song you hear. They build lore through clothes, live shows, videos and artwork, so that every release feels like a chapter rather than a product drop.

2hollis has been doing this for a while — the styling, the stage lighting, the stark visuals — but handing the cover to Amano moves it into another category. Fantasy illustration brings with it decades of meaning: heroes, curses, transformation, beauty that is slightly dangerous. By stepping into that tradition, 2hollis borrows its weight. He becomes, quite literally, a character in a mythology older than his audience.

The risk is obvious. Myth can become costume, and costume can become a gimmick. Whether Pirouette earns its cover will depend on the music, and we will not know that until 11/11. But the ambition is real, and it is rare. Most artists ask for attention. 2hollis is asking to be believed in — and he has chosen an image that makes that request impossible to scroll past.

05THE NEW WORLD-BUILDERS

What 2hollis represents is bigger than one album. Young experimental artists no longer wait for a label to give them a visual identity; they design it themselves, then invite collaborators who make the world deeper rather than tidier. Fashion, illustration, video and sound blur into a single language. The record becomes a portal, and the fans become explorers rather than consumers.

Seen that way, Pirouette is not just a cover reveal with good timing. It is a statement of intent from an artist who wants his work to be remembered the way we remember the worlds Amano painted: not as content, but as somewhere we once went.
